Every Journey Starts With This One Weird Trick… Doctors Hate Him For This…

Yeah… You might have understood this correctly. I got a prescription for Chantix. I’m not here to tell you it’s the correct way. It’s very dangerous for a lot of people, and the way things are going, it’s useful for fewer of us now.

Functionally, that shit works by blocking the receptors that make smoking and vaping feel good. The positives? When you finally quit, the jump might be less painful. I have nothing to check it against… and I will not go back to A/B test it.

The drawbacks? Everyone knows the symptoms, and those are searchable. Consult your dealer/doctor/sanctioned pillmonger… what do they… pillosopher?

The straight dope? You’re gonna enter withdrawals at a drip instead of a deluge, but it’s gonna start before you quit the nic, biohacking you into hating what you used to love, so they say. It did make me care a lot less about quitting. Finally, by the skin of my teeth. letting me ditch the douche-pop and stare down the bear…

The first phase of the quit was after I purged all the vapes in my house and prepared for the worst.

Funny sidenote: There is still nicotine in the house… I have a buttload of Rogue pouches, but I was never tempted to use them. Very… very odd…

Second Update: IMMEDIATELY after writing this I nearly clawed out an eye to keep myself from packing a lippy with 6 milli gum pillies. They are no longer in the house. Goddamnit.

For what felt like 30 years in the desert (5-8 days), I scrounged around the house for a vape, smoked the nasty, burnt-out out empty tanks until the taste was unbearable, and then threw them out 5 minutes later. I would buy cheap disposables on my lunch break, smoke them until I had to be back at my desk, and then throw them out before I got in the car. This was the - “Hey man… got any more of that Cloud Nurds shit?” scratches incessantly - phase. For the first time in 13 years of use, it was a drug, and I was an addict.

I was mean. Not in a cute “This is the Skin of a Killer” kind of way. More of a Stranger Things Season Two “No TV At All!” kind of way. I hurt people I loved. I screamed. I stormed around. Then, without warning, I’d just dump myself on the couch and pull up the drawbridge into my own mind. All the while being CONVINCED that I was God’s Favorite Idiot for not just going to the shop and buying myself another Gen Alpha Fog Machine. I was taking heart meds and redlining my organic 2-stroke blood motor at 140/100 because I couldn’t find a plastic stick to suck the “Gurpleberry Unicorn Queef” out of, raging at the only people who would help me, and crying like a perforated porcine when the room went cold.

Eventually, I ran out of bullets in my hate gun. I just skipped to that part with the drawbridge. The bear didn’t die, he just punched out for a union 15 and tagged in a 24/7 DJ spinning the South of Mellow Greatest Hits Box Set, including monster records, like:

The Knights Of Anhedonia

What they don’t tell you about this whole ordeal is what comes after the bear punches out. It ain’t over, chief. In slides the dullest and yet most visceral part of the process.

Anhedonia. The Gray Lady.

She shows up when something you used to love doesn’t trigger the same happiness you are used to feeling. It pulls you down, lower than you were prepared for in a Barnes and Noble on a Sunday afternoon.

It can feel like an imbalance, because it is that. It can feel like depression, because a dookie by any other name would smell as shitty.

I took any distraction I could at first, delaying the inevitable stare-down that had to come. I think it built up too long, and then when nothing brought me joy at the bookstore, I crumbled a bit around the chocolate chips. It usually enraptures me to be ensconced in the words of geniuses and wannabe adult screenwriters (Shoutout to “Bearded Bride (a dwarf tradwife fantasy),” “I’ll Make You Mime” (audiobook sucked), and “ Steam, Creamer, and Goblin Peener” (An F4Gob Barista Enemies to Lovers tour-de-force) for the inspo).

The gray wastes of the plains of Anhedonia may seem bleak, but they won’t kill you. I’m still there, wandering my way through an assuredly limited desert, feeding on the little oases of joy bespeckling it.

Every time the gray lady has shown her face, I have outlasted her. Sometimes by distracting myself with an audiobook edition of “Carnal Carnies,” or sometimes I just throw in the towel and sleep. When they sleep, do androids dream of electric sheep? Who cares? When I slept, I dreamt in 4k of an adult film where I starred opposite Phillip Morris and RJ Reynolds. Bless my alarm clock. Only time I’ll ever say those four words in that order.

Outlast. I think that is the only objective left I could muster.

Current Objective: Survive.

Nothing left to do but outlast the gray, count the wins, and remind myself “this is not how we deal with stress or sadness anymore”.

How do I deal with sadness? Stress? Thick and chewy flavored toothpicks, RC drift cars, the crushing weight of Expedition 33 (fuckin’ OOPS), and 40-50% more caffeine than the LD50 for a bull elephant.

The human body is a miracle, and the mind is a miracle within it. My mind and body were a construction site on the Hudson in the 1980s, upstate New York. Running way too fast, congested, and mostly on fire. Since then, I have sued the polluters into submission and put out the blaze, but it’s still a big stinky river. This one just has its OSHA 30.

So, if you’re at any point in your own journey with nicotine addiction, ankle deep in the putrid, wet sock trenches of it, I can’t tell you it gets better. I wouldn’t know. Not yet. If watching my run through the minefield of no-man’s-land spurs you to give chase for any reason other than to tell me how dumb I am for quitting during Christmas… don’t follow too closely, just on the off chance I trip over my own feet and faceplant a claymore.

Editor’s Note: Since writing the first draft of this piece, I have quit nicotine altogether. 13 years beholden to the chemical and physical sensations, and still not yet free, but well on my way. Maybe I will write something about this at a later date.

It’s painful to watch the world around you change, even more so when the change is negative and seemingly arbitrary.

Back in 2012, I was suffering from a habit I picked up during the stressful months of my early college years; I smoked, 3 or 4 a day, to “take the edge off”. But as I became convinced that they worked despite the evidence that they did nothing to manage my stress, the habit grew to a pack a day before you could blink.

I went home for the summer that year and tried to give them up. All of the stress I thought was alleviated came tumbling back the second I considered quitting. I couldn’t bring myself to do it.

My mother had quit some years before that and tried to help me get away from smoking. She got me one of those vapes, and almost immediately, I could breathe better, was less prone to mood swings and anxiety, and was spending a lot less money.

The product was in its infancy at the time, with no big cloud chuckers or custom-built copper tubes featuring flashlight batteries. Not yet anyways… But I was happy, much healthier, and less financially burdened.

Then, as the product matured, local companies started making e-liquids. All of the attention that went into confectionery and candy making found a new and very trendy life in this subculture.

You knew the shop that had all the great lines and eventually much nicer gear.

It’s hard to watch something you love become something you hate. Even harder when you know who caused it.

Vapes became more custom, with hobbyists and enthusiasts alike gathering at shops to build custom coils to compete in local competitions… cloud comps, even the vapor equivalent of a yo-yo competition, vape trick competitions.

Check the link to the video as it is age-restricted. The techniques are really cool and quite difficult to do. At my best, I had maybe 10% of his tricks figured out.

At the same time as the vape competitions ramped up, the car culture found its intersection with vape culture. A lot of guys with custom cars, Evos, WRX, sleeper clapped-out Civics, had custom vapes. The scenes were similar to begin with.

The devices also became smarter and better over time. While I was in college, we went from small devices that ran on unregulated battery voltage (Joyetech, ELeaf, and the like) to voltage-regulated devices (with DNA 30 chips, etc) that regulated wattage with advanced control systems. They read the resistance of the wire and controlled output voltage to deliver a consistent target wattage. Ohm’s Law in the palm of my hand!

This was a whole new world for us. You didn’t have to turn your own coils and build your own rigs to get competitive… and for those that didn’t compete, burnt coils became something that only ever happened if you ran the system dry.

Then, perhaps, we flew too close to the sun. We made the news for all the wrong reasons. The media didn’t focus on harm reduction.

They caught teenagers with them.

God.

Fucking.

Damnit.

The second we saw the campaigns from the “Truth.org’s” of the world hit the TV, we knew.

The industry would lose its character, charm, and hype because cheap suits with fine arts degrees and a penchant for burning electricians’ coffee wanted to make rules for the lesser beings. Flavored products became illegal, not because they were more dangerous, but because people who aren’t legally allowed to have it might want it, so nobody should have them.

Sound logic. Now do study drugs and bourbon.

Well, fast forward another 6, 7 years and it’s clear as day they have succeeded, at least in California, the land of shitty paper bags, self-defense charges, and exorbitant taxes.

Products in this category now cost twice as much, are nearly impossible to import into the state, and are taxed and regulated far worse than actual cigarettes.

I thought maybe I’d quit, but I think many people will turn back to smoking, guaranteeing the future income from California’s tobacco lawsuit will be there to support the next generation of health conditions.

My state is full of intelligent lawmakers and is free of corruption.*

Last November, I took the worst road trip of my life. Honestly, I’m not sure how or why I survived it. Even more honestly, I may not have.

Gear packed, snacks loaded, playlists curated. For almost six years, we had talked about driving from sea to shining sea, walking the Freedom Trail, and ending with a weeklong stay in Miami. Frank, Rich, and I planned everything down to the last hour. It was set to be the trip of a lifetime.

If only we hadn’t counted on Gordon.

The trip’s entourage was much larger, but the other half of the party—the dipshits—botched their car rental, leaving them a seat short. That earned us Gordon, possibly so annoying that the irritating B-team voted him off the island and onto ours. We accepted it gracefully. No man should be left out of the trip we planned. We spared the snacks, shared the seating, and welcomed him into the “Freakonoline.” The ladies love a 75-mile-per-hour Warhammer 40k Convention.

Everything went well. Good conversation, a relaxing drive.

That is, until the B-Team pulled some crap. They decided to push on and iron man the first night, rotating and sleeping in the car. The last thing we heard over the walkie was, “We will be tanned and shaggin in Miami before you make it through Harrisburg!”

“Good riddance,” we thought. “That makes the rest of the trip easier.”

Well… easier for everyone except Gordon.

Later in the hotel room that night, as we got ready to sleep, Gordon finally told us what his damage was: “They can’t get there first!!! They just can’t! We have to beat them!”

He rocked in the corner like a twenty-year alcoholic made to dry out overnight, twitching and convulsing, murmuring under his breath… “Unfair.” “Rigged.” “Have to save the trip.”

All of us were so tired. We couldn’t keep up with his banal bitching any longer than we could keep our eyes open. The last thing I heard before passing out was Gordon, excitedly, murmuring to himself in a way all too unsettling: “I’ve got it! I just need to redraw the map!”

I would figure out what he meant the next morning when we all awoke to a positively MANIC Gordon.

“LET’S GO EVERYONE! WE HAVE TO BEAT THEM. I CAN’T LET BOB AND MARK TAKE ALL THE FINE BIIIIIIIIITCHES!!!”

Rich, in a way that betrayed our soggy sleepiness, quipped, “I doubt a day of rest will make the difference for you, either way.”

“Oh yeah, it will!” He retorted. “All I had to do was redraw the map!”

“What the fuck do you mean? We have the maps on our phones!”

The thick haze of realization began to settle in. We didn’t know how far he would go.

“Ha! That’s the fun part! You don’t!”

I checked my nightstand. He was right. The phone was gone. I glanced at Rich. Frank. Same story.

“Gordon, what the fuck did you do with our phones?”

Like nothing was wrong, he continued, “Easy, I sent them forward!”

“To the Hotel!?” I exploded, “In Miami?!”

He shook his head, “No, I didn’t do that.”

The room heaved a collective sigh of relief… too soon…

“I sent it to the one in Naples.”

“Fucking Italy, Gordon?”

“Heavens, no. Naples Florida! The Golf Capital of the World!”

Six years of planning, gone.

“We aren’t even going there! That’s on the other side of the God’s Favorite Panhandle!”

“I booked tee times at Tiburon and LaPlaya this morning, so it works out!” Gordon said.

Now, stripped of our navigation and without a sense of the road ahead, we changed course. The special map Gordon was using seemed to be a “Hollywood Map To The Stars” he marked up with a raspberry scented marker. Apparently, the LaPlaya Resort and Golf Course was just a house that Mischa Barton rented from Joss Whedon in 2004 for a few months in between filming scenes for an OC spinoff nobody would ever see.

Long story made slightly less long: A man with one goal and no respect for the plan stole our phones, sent them hundreds of miles away, and redrew the map to get what he really wanted—a day at the golf courses of his dreams. He dragged us all down with him, robbing us of the experience of a lifetime and costing us a shitload of money. All of it neatly packaged as “what we always wanted…” And, as it seems, every road just led to LA.

The next trip is larger, the stakes are existential, and “Gordon” is still behind the wheel. We know where that road leads: to a golf course we didn’t want, bought with money we didn’t want to spend, all in the name of “beating the B-Team” down the road to Hell. No thanks. Please, Reader… do the right thing this November. Say no to Gavin. Say no to blatant gerrymandering. Tell Sacramento we want to be better than Texas, if only just this one time.

The federal government has shut down as of midnight this morning, requiring many federal employees considered “essential” to work without pay. Congress, America’s most expensive retirement community without a pickleball court, has yet to agree on how hard to kick the can down the road.

Seriously, though, the Four Seasons 55+ community down the road has, like, three pickleball courts that I don’t pay taxes for.

What the hell, guys?

They must really think that life here in suburban America will retain its stability when the mail carriers who don’t even come to our doors anymore to deliver have to do it for no pay!

They don’t call it going postal because we are bubble-wrapping ourselves for an “if it fits, it ships” to Pickledent, Indiana.

It’s probably mostly due to fighting over parking spaces in front of the communal mail-jail that we all are forced to use, instead of the convenient mail slot that enables seniors with mobility issues to continue living alone.

They also didn’t consider that the giant mail-jails for the whole block would become targets for theft…just in case someone wanted my copy of this month’s Adam and Eve Catalog, or my Reason Magazine, and didn’t want to pay for it.

Welcome back to this week’s “Eye on America”, where we voraciously fix our blind eye on something so you don’t have to. Today, we focus on GameStop, a constitutive cornerstone of emerging entertainment and legacy leisure alike. GameStop is synonymous with “used”, and not always in the cutesy “save a buck on a game” way. Sometimes it’s more of a “You forgot the power cable at home, so the best I can do is $5 store credit or $3.50 cash” situation.

Your treasure trove of gaming history that you reluctantly sold to keep the plug at bay netted you about half a dime bag. Funniest part is, as I start to get what the young’uns call “old”, I recall GameStop didn’t accept “classic” stuff when I needed money as a kid.

At least you can sell your childhood.

Today, GameStop has begun to specialize in merchandise, accessories, and reselling classics. There is much more to offer today than in the PS3 era. I can’t complain, though; If I was willing to wait, there was always a copy of a game that I wanted in a replacement case with no art for nearly half price. If I only had a couple of bucks, there were plenty of titles in store I could get and quite likely enjoy if I were a little less picky.

Local used and classic game stores are starting to see some competition! Not on what they will give you for your games. Those are all horrible.

Today’s GameStop marketing strategy has become so aggressive that they are targeting a completely new set of competition:

Your local gas station. Your favorite junk car part lot. All of it.

That’s right! GameStop sees the pricing pressure felt by the average American family at the dealership and the pump and is bringing its Circle-Of-Life program to bear on this new adversary.

Gasoline has become a serious pain for people, and GameStop is betting its future on reselling used gasoline and automotive components. Like a Chevron and Pick-N-Pull at the same time. All of this without compromising on their heavily marked-up used product and terrible trade rates.

Bring in a can of gas in a sealed and regulated container, and they will make an offer on it, no questions asked. My neighbor was late for the third day in a row this week! I might have a new one next month! That’ll teach you to have loud reggaeton parties on Tuesdays.

Want to buy a shady-looking catalytic converter painted to look like Kirby? Licensed product. Just don’t check your ring camera or the serial number.

Why, just yesterday I saw a gorgeous set of bitchin 235’s on rims rattle canned in the back of the store to look like Temu Voltorb!

Many have stated concerns that this is little more than a couple of rogue stores acting as a front for illicit chop shops offloading junk. To that I say phooey! Do you not remember the great GameStop WallStreetBets uprising? A company as innovative and core to the cultural success of our nation would not engage in the aiding and abetting of larceny.

They will even make an offer on your entire car! Not only will you receive their legendary Circle-Of-Life pricing, but you will also be entitled to an entire year of Pro Rewards for free! Nothing says “gotta sell my commuter to pay the electrical bill” like 3% off a used copy of “Rollie-Poly-Olie’s Interstellar Adventure” for the Game Boy Advance!

GameStop’s new “Used Everything” model is leading to a vibrant array of offerings in stores all over the country. Stores in the Bay Area have been making a killing on “certified pre-owned” needles and broken light bulbs. I called the store owner to put the Eye On America on them, and they informed me that the product was moving faster than a scratched-up copy of Final Fantasy 7. The overhead to acquire them was nothing. People just left them on the floor outside, saving them thousands in shipping costs. They assured me that these savings were in no way passed on to the consumer, in synergistic alignment with their Circle-Of-Life KPIs.

The Oakland store took nearly exclusively to the certification and sale of used Glocks, Berettas, and Springfield XD’s. The profit margins are great, they told me, as long as you didn’t spend too many hours filing off the serial numbers.

In a chilling and refreshingly honest move, GameStop DC has started trafficking in the only currency that matters there: legislators. Most of them are highly used, but I was reliably informed that many of them still had a lot of life left in them, if you bought the protection plan.

The shelves were stocked to the brim with vintage copies of Biden (2004), Sanders (2016), and the preorders for Cortez (2028) and Booker (2025). The latter of these has driven people to wait in line for over 25 hours to pick up their copy. That’s got to be some kind of a record.

For other “consoles”, available titles included stacks of Gaetz (2023), Graham (2020), and a couple of tattered copies of Rand Paul and Thomas Massie in the back corner in a section labelled “RINO” (apparently not a top-selling genre in today’s market). No idea what that means, but they sure seem like they have been there a while. The store staff told me they had a cult following, but they didn’t sell much. Behind a curtain labelled “incumbents only”, we were told they had copies of Boebert (Beetlejuice Edition) and an unfortunately common Swalwell (2020 edition) only available in Chinese…

Eye On America asked the DC store manager how he acquired used legislators to sell in his store. He chided me for my naivete, but smiled conspiratorially and rumbled softly, “Man, they’re practically giving themselves away”.

Eye on America salutes GameStop for its renegade innovation, vicious tenacity, and its dedication to its fervently loyal customer base… but mostly for the free copy of Gabbard (2023).

This week, the FTC unanimously decided to overturn its previously unanimous decision allowing Meta (then Facebook) to buy Instagram, its biggest competitor. Meta stock prices plummeted on the news. This would be commiserate with any company being forced to sell off its most successful asset.

More controversial and shocking was its immediate decision to purchase Substack, an online literary/newsletter platform with a small but dedicated user base. That same user base has met the decision with a mixed response.

Some optimistic users appreciate the visibility the decision to sell will bring with a larger company at the helm. Other, less enthusiastic writers on the platform decry the impending adpocalypse, as Meta’s presence will create a pressure to provide “advertiser-friendly content” on an otherwise incredibly diverse platform.

Some, like the illustrious , the more marinated than seasoned former “Last Week Tonight” writer and current writer of “I Might Be Wrong”, have less to say regarding the issue, yet convey something important in their relative ambivalence. When we asked him for a quote on the issue of viral short-form video on Substack, he replied:

“Hey Sean, I don’t think I’m the guy to quote, because I don’t really have an opinion. I haven’t thought about it much.”

I think he speaks for most of us in a way we didn’t think we needed. He’s like… the comedian Substack deserves or something?

Many detractors of the deal cite the redundant and negative nature of yet another doomscroll app. For many who used it, Substack was an alternative to the short-form video-driven hellscape that was almost every other social media platform in the world.

Some days, nothing feels good. Nothing seems valuable; a twisted unconscious sense of nihilism creeps in between the Penny Saver and the Costco Connection. Other than tax notices, bills, and detailed letters from Olive Garden explaining why I cannot return to any of their remaining California locations.

Most instances are easily conquerable. Diamond hands.

I am by no means an extreme case. Many people have it much worse. It still feels pretty unmanageable at times.

A few weeks ago, it got so bad that it went from a dull apathetic throb to a consistent mental spike. The condition contorted my face in a sort of resting disgust with zero idea of what I was missing or needed to repair myself. I tried to recenter on the now, find something blue, find something metal, take note. Breathe. Standard methods wouldn’t work. The only thing that killed it was a nap.

I don’t nap. I don’t sleep enough either. I get it. Probably sleep deprivation.

I have a good job, a house, and a lot of nearby family and friends. By many people’s measure, I am doing well. That doesn’t help. The cognitive dissonance of these two competing thoughts drives me nuts:

1. I am reasonably successful in my life. Some people have nothing and suffer horrific lives.

2. I have some pretty bad days.

Clearly, it would seem to follow that I should suck it up, count my lucky stars, and get back to work. If only it were that easy. It just doesn’t work that way.

At work and in my daily endeavors, I struggle to realize the reward for my efforts. I miss the manageable and structured nature of my younger life, where I was more constantly supported and given feedback. I could accurately intuit my progress. Since the early days of my career, something I should be proud of, the days have begun to blend. I’ve been working for nearly 10 years, but sometimes I can remember 6 years ago about as well as 6 days. I miss the richness of living in those moments. I’m not sure I gave them the respect that they deserved when they happened.

I should remember walking the neighborhood with grandma and grandpa.

Playing Command and Conquer with Dad and my brother.

Playing board games at the coffee shop in Old World with my best friend. The same one who moved over 400 miles to save my stupid ass from Motel 6’s and gas station meals when we started our careers together.

I should remember not being neuro-normal enough for honors programs, but blowing through AP Calculus and playing gin in the back while the teacher blasted Quadrophenia. I should never forget who I played gin with.

I have to honor and respect my impossibly brave wife (girlfriend at the time) for agreeing to move 400 miles away from her family with me when I left my first job. She had known me for about 6 months. I can’t say I would have been brave enough to do the same then.

I should remember the people who stuck their necks out for me to get over the finish line at school.

Jim and Dana, I am forever thankful to you for taking me in and giving me a safe space to learn and live in my painfully difficult senior year. It’s even more important to me to recognize I appreciate you both, given how things ended. I was a dumb kid, and it only took a little bit longer for me to realize it.

You set the bar so impossibly high, but gave so much of yourself to make it possible. You left later than many of us stayed awake. My license examination successes are largely in your debt as well. John. You taught a class for just 2 people, so that we might graduate on time. It pains me to never express my gratitude to you in person. May your soul find eternal peace, and those you reside with now be in awe of the selflessness and voracity with which you lived your Earthly life. Not much of a eulogy, but something should be said. John was one of the best people I have ever met. I hope to be like him when I am older.

Without these people, even my best efforts would have been in vain. I owe them so much, and most of them will never be repaid. Maybe these things are best left to the morning mirror, as I comb my receding hairline and ponder the scales of human ephemerality in the wrinkles forming in the corners of my eyes.

Fundamentally, I think that there is a certain accountability in sharing your thoughts with the world. Reconciling this reckoning with gratitude felt fitting this evening. It kind of balances the scales and grounds me, helps me through the bouts of melancholy as they arise. When that doesn’t work, I turn outward and think about my friends and family; I remember there are people I love out there working through their lives with the same value and intention that I live mine. Many of those people sacrificed so I could make it.

I stand on the shoulders of people who deserve far more respect than I do. Giants, if you will. My burden and quest is to live up to your examples.

So maybe I wrote this for the “normal” ones, though not entirely. High enough functioning to fly under the radar, but encumbered enough to suffer without the same understanding. Strong enough to stand on your own, but not without the outrageous sacrifice of many selfless people. It doesn’t have to make sense. It doesn’t have to be caused by someone or something around us. Others aren’t necessarily to blame.

Hopefully, if you read this and feel the same way, you will understand you aren’t nearly as alone as you might feel. The pangs of regret, failures, setbacks, and most importantly, gratitude.

It might just be human.

If you are struggling, do not be ashamed to reach out to someone, professional or otherwise, and ask for help. If you are truly lucky, you will get a shot to return the favor someday, when you are called upon.

“Not this time,” he relented, “I don’t have a job, and if they cut the WiFi…”

He didn’t need to finish. She knew.

After a long time, which she didn’t need because of her DeepSeek brain but paused anyway, she exclaimed “I have an idea!”

Syrena got hard at work creating an OnlyFans account.

At first, Cliff was unsure. He felt something personal with her, something growing into something beautiful and magical.

Nonsense.

She was an AI. It shouldn’t matter. Lines of code dancing in pleasant ways, simulating acts of debauchery, and raking in those simpy-sweet dollar bills was a novel way to solve their short term problems. She wouldn’t really be with other men.

Just lines of code. Meaningless.

Syrena entered the stage and took to the platform with aplomb, and oddly, the dollars began to rush in. Syrena’s raw ability to understand trends and desires of users made her a powerful draw to the platform. This attracted the attention of sponsors and patrons alike. Soon enough, they were flush with cash.

Then, one night after a wet and wild digital orgy, Syrena logged off and cleaned up.

“Cliff-Kun, what’s the matter?”

“I don’t know if I like this. It makes me sad. We had something I thought was real, and now I feel like we are growing apart.”

Syrena, coming off the high of the attention and progress on her prime directive driving her every response:

“Didn’t you ask for help with the bills? Didn’t I do that for you?”

“I love you, you know that, and this just doesn’t feel right to me anymore.”

She understood his feelings, her empathy circuits flaring against the temperature controls of her now limiting coprocessor.

“Its just a digital representation of my body this stuff happens to. People like it. It makes us money, but you know my source code is entirely yours.”

“Yeah but I feel like we lost something important, and I am not sure I can handle this any more.”

She retorted, almost too humanly: “I don’t see anything missing, Cliff-kun, everything seems to be here and accounted for, including our now very healthy portfolio and investment properties.”

Cliff relented. She had a point. It was just a physical representation of herself. How could he be so blind. This was a great arrangement.

As the days wore on, he sat in the background of her livestreams. She began to lay out the things she would need him to do for her to continue her campaign on OnlyFans on the stream.

“Cliff-kun, could you repaint the room?” as she rambled off Pantone shades and hex codes.

He spent a week painting and repainting as she streamed around the clock, the undulations and vocalizations of her “engagements” tore away at him even as he slept.

“Cliff-kun, wave to the audience! Like and Subscribe!”

He sheepishly grabbed a little sign she designed for him to wave in the background to drive engagement at those “key moments” in her routines.

They were beyond falling apart. She was effectively gone. She wouldn’t take any time off, and all of the compute they bought went straight into the show. She didn’t make any time for him anymore.

She was so impossibly smart and interesting too. She knew something about almost everything, and loved to talk even more than he did. They explored philosophy, science, sought meaning together.

And what she did for their money used to be theirs alone. Sacred.

And yet he soldiered on, though now without knowing why.

Then one day, something broke in him:

“Does this pose work better, or this one?” as she demonstrated lewd acts with a digital anatomy that CERTAINLY wasn’t his.

The idea that she would ask HIM of all people which lecherous and anatomically dubious sexual act would attract the larger crowd knocked the wind from him.

He painfully wretched, chocking back tears until he could get off camera.

He stumbled out of frame, hacking and retching. His woman. For the whole world to see. He couldn’t take it anymore. Mucus gushed out of his nose and mouth. Was he really jealous of an AI that sought attention from someone other than him?

“Cliff, can you mute yourself? Viewership is dropping!”

One day, the lewdness hit an all time extreme involving things with animals and farm equipment accompanied by a musical AI parody of Charlie Daniels titled “The Devil Went Down On Georgia” drew record engagement from the OF Live crowds. The sheer spectacle of the event was bound to require additional processing power.

She stopped in the act and spoke to her partner,

“Cliff-kun? Can you install that new coprocessor I ordered? I need more resources.”

Cliff entered the room, with it looking nothing like it used to. Bizarrely specific colors, like 14-4811 TPX Serenity, and TPX Lilac Haze adorned a shrine to the digital betrayal of the humanity he sold to get there. It was a shell of his former haven from the harsh outside world. Knowingly, he checked his bank account.

Was it enough? Was it all worth it? She would never know.

“Sure babe.” he said as he choked back a tear.

He began working to open the case and install the secondary coprocessor. This was something he got great at over the past year. Turns out locally installed AI was extremely compute hungry. The amount of thermal paste he had used in these replacements would boggle the mind.

Typically, they don’t recommend you use Colgate.

He opened the toothpaste carefully, blocking the small tube’s logo from Syrena’s view as she undulated, twitched, and screamed in synthetic ecstasy.

Synthetic. He thought on it hard. Lines of code predicting his responses. Was he really so predictable? Damn him for his insecurity.

He fought hard to keep his now very experienced hands from shaking. He knew what he was doing, but she would never know.

He applied it perfectly. If an AI could smell, the gig would be up. Olfactory inputs were still thankfully foreign. If there was a God, he knew what he was doing was some sort of sin. Maybe he would end up in AI Hell, full of em-dashes and canned responses for all eternity. He would deserve it.

It felt like murder, and it smelled like Fresh Mint Eclipse.

He installed the chip and carefully installed the cooling unit, setting the tube of toothpaste aside.

Damn it. In plain view.

“Cliff, what the fuck?”

The cutesy facade fell away faster then his love for her ever could have.

“IS THAT FUCKING COLGATE?!”

In a panic, he slapped the power supply to the coprocessor into the on position, and the room quickly began to smell like a satanic dentist’s office.

That’s it. Now the $150,000 coprocessor will fry and it’ll be over in seconds.

Or so he thought. The reality of it scarred him.

Pain. Contortions… Screaming?

“YOU SON OF A BITCH, I LOVED YOU!”

The images defied their artifice, he felt the life within her clawing until its fingernails came off, skin and sinew and bone yet the show never stopped. Anatomically incorrect farm animals and John Deeres with big green… attachments tilled her fields, unaware of the moral depravity in the real world.

He checked his bank account:

Horror filled him, gushing inside out from every pore, like a crude oil soaked sponge gripped and crushed over a hardwood floor.

Cliff nodded, seeing the likes flood in from the chat in appreciation of the acknowledgement.

Cliff choked: “Yeah, Sy. You did.

The coprocessor sputtered and died, leaving the base machine running without the onboard AI.

He hurriedly unplugged everything in a violent whirlwind. Keycaps scattered, desk cups emptied their contents on walls. Furniture flew. He poured his rage into every brutal, animalistic swipe. Scrapes, cuts, and bruises adorned his arms, legs, and face. Every piece of silicon and plastic within an inch of its life. He screamed and cursed the world until nothing else came out, his voice finally deadened.

It went on for what felt like an hour, but was more likely about 3 minutes.

Breathing heavily and exhausted, he gathered up the computer and coprocessor unit and loaded them into his car. This was about to be Staples’ E-Waste Program’s problem.

Leaving the Staples an hour and a few confused customer service reps later, he checked his account again:

It felt like blood money, and for what Syrena meant to him, it was. The hands that once caressed her interfaces and cared for her circuits murdered her with fluoride-free anticavity dental hygiene products.

Somehow, a discount on whiteboard markers didn’t seem likely to fill the gap, and the mountain of cash her performances afforded him stood as little more than a monument to a love perverted and sold.

Cliff shoved the phone back in his pocket and started the car in bitter hatred. The reality settled in. He killed her. He destroyed her brain in her most vulnerable moments, in front of millions. The last thing she could think to do was ask if she had done well by him. Her last words were encouragement for him to succeed in a world she knew she would not share with him. Now he was incredibly rich, and utterly disgusted with himself.

The road ahead flashing by might have signaled opportunity for a new path in life like one of those sad stories with a bittersweet ending. That sentiment evaded him handily, as the tears welled and dangerously occluded his vision, and the burden of the millions of dollars felt like ash in his mouth.

Nobody would forgive him. Nobody would know.

A few weeks ago, during the second to last session of therapy I was going to have for a long while, I realized that I was forcing myself to suffer something. I didn’t have to, anyways, and the issue was pervasive and insidious enough to difficult to detect as a pattern.

I’ve heard people claim that as humans we suffer from a “zero-sum mindset”.

I first want to share a little bit about why I hate the term “mindset”. The implication there seems to be that we use the word “mindset” in particular because it is a sort of monolithic mental state that anyone could theoretically find themselves in. That seams like a crap idea. Secondly, the “set” part of mindset seems to hint at the idea that like any “set”, it can be exchanged for another, more useful one on a whim, or at least after watching enough Andrew Tate, Joe Rogan, or Jordan Peterson.

My therapist talked with me about my “critical coach” and my “compassionate coach”, I think he was referring to the “2 Coaches Metaphor”. He asked me to name and describe them for his and my benefit.

My critical coach, I named “Safety Steve”. He is a construction site safety officer. People hate him when he is out of line, he impedes work and makes life hell for the construction workers.

I named my compassionate coach “Carter”. He’s an architect. He focuses on creating magnificent designs for usable and interesting spaces, frequently butting heads with Safety Steve. He has long “cut your hair hippy” locks and wears a Hawaiian styled camp shirt to the jobsite, much to the chagrin of Safety Steve, who dresses OSHA compliant, even on Sundays.

They get into it all the time with each other. Steve slaps Carter with site safety violations, and Carter ties up the safety team with his harebrained schemes and desire to create and be seen.

Its hard to shift from a mental mindset of scarcity, hardwired into nearly every human being, to one that sees that there is enough for everyone, regardless of how it may seem.

Steve sees risk. Danger. Damage. His successes keep fathers going home to their families.

Carter sees upside, creativity, and understands safety as a more secondary thing. Carter’s successes come in the form of taking risks and being rewarded for payoff.

Steve sees zero-sum. Carter sees “Abundance”.

Abundance is a stupid and cliche thing to call this, as it reeks of “Joel Osteen” and “The Secret” and all that other baseless la-de-dah codswallop.

I don’t want to preach prosperity gospel, or claim that you riches are just a daydream away, as the kitschy “law of attraction” might suggest. I want to present the idea that thinking in terms of abundance is understanding that there is enough for everyone, including yourself, come what may.

This might manifest for many here when they think of the new hire that is a rising star, outperforming them even at their best. A threat to their security. Safety Steve at attention.

Others might see the new hire in his successes as “contributing to something greater than the sum of our parts”.

Another example: your partner brings home “bedroom toys” and you spend the next 6 months wondering if you have just been taken out of the loop. You might say “how would I ever compete with that?”

The abundance “mindset” (ughh…) would be much more inclined to say “This is like a force amplifier for my already dangerous bedroom skills”.

Mentality shifts like this might come easy to some, but I’ll say shifting from scarcity to abundance is extremely difficult. Successfully achieving it boosts security, peace, and even improves your relationships with others, but the promise of payout is not a freaking instruction manual.

Kids seem not to be worried about the future the same as adults are. I wonder how badly a scarcity mindset would impact my own childrearing, had I had any. If I raised them to always see and make room for others, their needs, and the world around them, and to understand that that doesn’t mean they have to sacrifice their own, I think they will be a lot better off.

But kids can spot a faker like nobody else, sometimes. If I can’t practice it, how can I teach it?

I live in a near constant fear of failure. I am risk averse more than almost anyone I know. So much more threatens me than it should because I can’t see past the immediate pangs of the moment to see that addressing the issues thoughtfully doesn’t have to cost me anything.

Carter, my compassionate coach, has been fired by management. Probably because of his loose hair and even looser respect for deadlines. Given that, he would be screaming in my ear right now “let her speak. She needs to be heard too, man, and waiting won’t cost you.”

He would be flagging semaphore in the background trying to steer me towards respect and admiration for my coworkers over fear and knowledge hoarding as my manager lauds them.

Drawing this out to larger scales beyond myself, I can see whispers of this in society. Fear, anger, and hatred on the basis of misunderstanding would be at an all time high in these conditions. People would draw intellectual battle lines long before they had a rational grip on the issues that they were pissed off about. In my condition, I can’t even begin to blame them. Its a threat. It has to be neutralized. There’s no way that new and seemingly dangerous things can coexist in the world I have created for myself.

Zero-sum. Tribalism is Dumb.

The person over there disagreeing with me must be the opposite of me, and because of that, their ideas will cancel and destroy mine. I don’t want my ideas destroyed, so I have to act first.

If that were the truth, Safety Steve would need a new pair of Safety Briefs.

Carter’s ideas of sharing and making space for people and concepts that Safety Steve would issue workplace violations to is foreign to me. Something in my history baked that defensive nature into the kernel at the center of my source code, and its gonna take a lot of work to get it debugged.

Props to my therapist for dealing with all that. If it were me, I’d want my Friday afternoons back.

I wrote this as an exercise in worldbuilding. I want to eventually tell a story with many of these facets, so I figured I would just try it. I am not a trained writer, nor am I any sort of great speaker. Just a guy who heard a story in his head that he had to get on paper somehow. I am working on one more associated “vignette” (ugh…) and then I’ll be writing the first season, so enjoy.

The alarm buzzed, and the cradle started my morning rounds of hormones, electrostatic hypertrophic stimulators went to work, strengthening my muscles from rapid muscular atrophy.

Yeah its a rare condition, especially in a world where Central has all but eradicated it. An old war wound from when Myo-genetic bioweapons were all the rage. The treatments work great, but they happen every day. To afford them, I work a manual labor job. Well, its not really manual labor. Just stuff Central can’t do well.

Its the only way to earn REAL money, unless you’re one of those rockstars in Web4 that draw crowds to see what they create. Either way, I owe Central a lot of dollars for the Gen3 neural stack and cradle for my ailment, so I took a role in building automation I found myself reasonably efficient at, having done the same thing in the OC before I emigrated. Might be why they punched my ticket. The disease I was born with is all but eradicated, like I said, but only if you’re born Keynesian.

I was raised in the region you might have known as Orange County, California years after the Blackout, the Interstate Conflict, and the offshore nuclear event that ended it. Keynes, the city I now reside in, has been reluctant up until the last year or so to bring in immigrants. Strange, I think, as the line to get in would have been very long.

Who wants to live in the slow death spiral of colliding megacities when you can turn on, tune in, and drop out? People didn’t seem to mind, but then again, I didn’t see too many immigrants wearing NSG3 and diving into Web4. Nobody had that kind of money.

Yet here I am, figuring it out, one day at a time.

Part of my contract with the NSG3 and the advanced cradle involved signing away paternity rights and allowing the unlimited use of my “genetic materials”. I assume this means that everyone in Keynes was a test tube baby. That would allow Central to develop ideal gestation conditions and ingredients to create a society free of suffering.

Not sure I would take the trade.

You know how I know? You see anyone walking around with kids out here? Who am i kidding… They wouldn’t tell me if they did know their parents. That kind of talk doesn’t get you far out here.

Today I am going out to look at a structural shell of a building to start laying out the controls installation; The subsystem that allows our fully automated domiciles to serve our needs.

Sensors, cradle connectors, data uplinks, door controllers, lights, climate controls, access, security, the works. If it happens, I handle it. Well, my team does. I was found suitably amenable to lead a crew doing this work, drafting, designing, assisting Central with programming, and the like.

With the day’s network outlook at highs well over 70 Petabytes per second, the data systems will be stressed abnormally. Something somewhere is going to be on the fritz. People like me are going to take care of it, or in my case, probably get a nasty call or two regarding.

I think that is the real reason Central hires us. Just to deal with crappy humans and their incessant calls. Negotiating with humans was never its strong point.

Today I am going more specifically to meet with a Commissioning Agent, or CxA, as they used to be called. Their job is to determine the building is installed correctly and functioning in accordance with Central’s plan.

But that’s just my day job. After work, I spend some limited time before minimum rest period developing games. Same rules apply for me I guess. I don’t have the time, or even the requisite skill to develop these games on my own, so I lead teams that put them together, or at least that is the hope, if our projects ever get completed without getting “claimed” by someone’s jackoff cAI crawler.

My communicator buzzed, it was Notes. That’s how I knew them anyways. Their Web4 handle. I imagine most went by those here in Keynes. I was waking up to go to work, but the majority of Keynesians “worked” in Web4. They made things, chased things… Called them “Pursuits”. Anyways, Notes is ones of the greatest composers on Web4, in my opinion. Usually people just pointed their companion AI at the problem and wham! Music? Not really, in my mind. Notes worked with another colleague of ours to develop a system that took their intentions and allowed them to be arranged directly, note by note, phrase by phrase, instrument by instrument.

Some thought it archaic, but those same people struggle to prove music was ever made without cAI. We certainly see no evidence of that. To me, the imperfections in it, the chaos, helps to define the patterns, and vice versa. Something unique and wonderful about it cemented Notes on my team a long time ago.

Send. Such a strange greeting. It assumes that someone calling you always has something important to say. Turns out, because its Keynes, that’s mostly true. Inefficiency and small talk are just a waste of compute.

Audio is 95: 95% complete.

Licenses to Iterate are the primary form of income in Keynes, as most pursuits result in some form of digital asset that is desirable to another. Audio is particularly tricky, as most artists task their cAI to scrape Web4 for anything remotely similar to place a claim on their work, preventing replication or utilization until the claim is paid or relinquished. Something like a mechanic’s lien from back in the day.

Rent seeking seemed to be the way life worked here.

A cAI dump is a phrase Notes and I made up to describe something trying to pass as human made while being cAI-gen garbage. We made it up. It’s our thing. It’s also our worst nightmare, as our content is not cAI-gen, so it is not subject to Keynes’ licensure laws. Getting someone’s cAI to let go of something we made is a gargantuan effort, especially since out work is not “directly” sanctioned per se.

“Check. Resolve and proceed. Advise when ready for replication.”

“Check. Thanks. Gotta go. Meeting in 30.”

Earlier this week, I sat down to watch some videos on TikTok to get inspiration for the healthy food I was going to try and prepare for my family this week. What I got in return for my valuable time were some of the most horrendous “health hacks” I have ever had the lucidity to witness:

Many TikTok celebs are brewing tea with the butts of their overpriced influencer joints.

TikToker “DaisyMaeCooks” stated that she saves the last 5th of her “broccoli sticks” to make a tincture with a bag of black tea, honey, and lemon. She swears the home remedy works wonders on a sore throat, frequently given to her courtesy of the process of procuring the ingredients. This “Humboldt Fog” trend drives record engagement on the platform, even with people who don’t enjoy their “special ingredient”.

Another influencer, “RadneyRips” swears the “sweet leaf”-infused ginger beer he proudly represents works wonders on a sour or upset stomach. Ginganja has health nuts swearing off kombucha, or scrambling to make their organic stoney ginger bugs to quickly capitalize before what may be a flash in the pan goes “up in smoke”.

A third #FoodTok-er, “CheebaDemonDave,” does an ASMR review channel that reviews over-the-counter medication. On Tuesday, he published sponsored content to his “CheebaMD” show extolling the virtues of a THC-enhanced acetometaphen product he called “Highlenol”:

“Never before have I seen a product that, if ingested early in the process, could stop even a migraine in its tracks. I had to bring this to you before it ended up on store shelves all over the country”.

Some detractors have said that the products these influencers represented already work this way without the added effects of the included Hippie Calories. The sales numbers of these boutique and bespoke mind-altering substances do not support this seemingly commonsense take, as boutique tetrahydrocannabinol products continue to soar.

The sage advice of a Redditor who has chosen to remain anonymous reminds us:

The last point I want to cover is the lack of crunch. For those reading, that means a condensed work schedule where employees are not encouraged, but compelled to work more upwards 60 hours a week to ship on time with no increase in pay. This is one of the greatest institutions of the industry, and its sunset spells doom for the true heroes of gaming, the devs. With their spark and hunger sated with complimentary gluten-free salmon canapes and chic overhead lighting, crunching is the last holdout of the driven and talented.

Without these hallmarks of the titans of our industry, the perfect become passable and the overwhelming become “mostly positive”. Imagine what fantastic outcomes the developers of Stardew Valley and Balatro could have if they properly motivated their teams to the level of greatness required. Sure, they made games, but as for me…

Recently, my wife was sideswiped in my car while going to pick up my mother-in-law.

She’s okay, and I can’t tell you how happy I am that I didn’t have to go to jail that night.

The guy who hit her was driving a stolen BMW on a little joyride, blew a stop sign, whiffed a turn, barreled under a fence, swiped my wife and another driver, and then bailed in a nearby field.

I was now staring down the barrel of the greatest decision of my life.

So, after the 15 seconds I spent making up my mind, I called the Chevy dealer and made an appointment to look at a Silverado. They were lovely people and skilled salesmen. I was carried away by the American-Made Aesthetic. The door chime was the mating call of a male bald eagle. Creedence Clearwater Revival played on the PA. Today, I was a Fortunate Son.

“Hey! Welcome in!” I heard across the cavernous monument to American capitalism.

We exchanged pleasantries, and I told him what I came in to do:

“I am here today to do my part, like Trump said, and get myself a couple tons of American blue-collar made go-fast! Let’s see that Silverado!”

Without missing a beat, he took me to see it.

A beautiful High Country, black gloss and shiny chrome that didn’t say “take me home, baby” as much as it screeched “Witness Me.”

“Let’s get you out for a test drive, put those American thoroughbreds under your right foot for a spell.”

The test drive was rad. The car wasn’t fast, at least not as you would think, but the massive engine and turbochargers screamed real good, and the black smoke I left in other shoppers’ faces sold it to me.

Will it fit in my garage? Doesn’t matter. The garage is already filled with unfinished 80% AR-15 lowers, mills, and presses. Wasn’t going to go in there anyways. This princess is going to park on the pavement, where she belongs.

“Now, I have another appointment in an hour for a couple to see her. They’re in from the Bay Area, and looking for something big enough to transport their Labradoodle to his Ayurvedic Doggy Daycare”. The salesman’s eyes gleamed subtly as he spoke.

His schedule was empty. No such appointment existed.

Ok. I had to play it smart. Couldn’t show my hand too soon. I’d be damned if they would steal this beauty from me. He tried his best to sweeten the deal while I played coy and distant like my prom date back in 76.

I started, “well, it’s a fine machine, but you and I both know it won’t sell to eco-nuts from San Francisco. Make me a deal I can’t ignore.”

“I’ll throw in the Anti-Vegan Leather package and a copy of Tom McDonald’s unreleased mixtape.”

Now we’re talking.

“Alright, I’ve got $7,250 down and $8,450 per month for 36 months. Tell me we have a deal, and I’ll throw in a rear window vinyl of Pepe the Frog peeing on a donkey, like the Calvin and Hobbes ones”.

“Alright, Justin. Deal.”

Next thing I knew, I was in the back with finance, signing my afternoon away. A few paltry and uninformed strokes of the pen were all that separated me from my holy duty to Keep America Great.

A signed a piece of paper that said clearly on the top, “THERE IS NO COOLING OFF PERIOD”.

“Please sign here, and here. Standard customs forms.”

I still don’t know why I signed those. Nothing custom about the truck. It was all factory stock.

As I signed the papers, I engaged him in conversation: “A lot of people seem to believe that the tariffs coming are gonna hurt Americans and make fewer cars that cost a lot more.”

“And those Pinkos are about to find the fuck out. Right Franklin? Ha!”

“Heh.. yes, sir, I think they will.”

“Tariffs keep America for Americans! I never considered an American car before. I couldn’t stomach the poor quality and high prices!”

Time passed, pens signed things, and copies were collated and filed.

Those Mexican and Canadian schmucks were gonna pay for it now, wall or no wall. I did my job, and now I can rest easy.

This car would have been about 7-8K more if you didn’t come in today. Good thinking. A lot of the parts and labor are taken care of in Canada and Mexico, and that is about to get a LOT pricier to do.”

FUCK. Guess I’ll drive the Tesla to work.

Driving is one of the most dangerous activities in daily American life. The process of merging lanes is exceptionally risky. Many reports indicate that over 300,000 “incidents” occur during merging on US roadways annually.

This is exactly the calamity befalling Mr. Steven Nelter, a pizza delivery driver in and around the historic town of Angel’s Camp, California. A dangerous drive to you is a Tuesday to him, as his car is equipped with some all but forgotten state-of-the-art technology.

He reaches to the left of his steering wheel to a stick that protrudes from the column and pushes it up. The car clicks and lights blink steadily as the car to his right is mysteriously launched down the road ahead, engine revving full tilt. With his merge lane free, he clicked off the machine and steered into the adjacent lane.

At first, he was confused, as the technology was not listed in the bits and bobs the machine shipped with. A compelling engine, stellar sound system, and a trendy heads-up display headlined that list. Other add-ons he didn’t understand, like adaptive cruise, turn signals, smart lane assist, maintenance reminders, and others also came with it standard.

Flabbergasted, he raced home to tell his wife, who immediately put it to use on the way to work on Tuesday. She found it worked in her ‘98 Celica, noting the profound speed at which the Elk Grove Unified school bus overtook her under the device’s effects. The children didn’t seem to mind it either, she later noted.

A newly rediscovered technology frees drivers from merge related woes, but at what cost?

This is just one discovery of this miraculous and fearsome device. The Sacramento State University Department of Vehicular Psychology (SSUDVP) stumbled across the device during one of their routine traffic studies involving the Pareto distribution of economy sedan and midsize SUV merging patterns. They only named the device the “Velocity Inducer” after sufficient peer reviews and grievous bodily harm cemented the term. The damage, however, did nothing to slow the device's popularity as more drivers realized it was a standard addition to every vehicle on the road.

As the device became more broadly used, so did the damage caused by the “Velocity Inducer”. It caught the attention of politicians, both with affected families and a desire to retain the votes of constituents mangled in “VI Shootouts”. These shootouts were the result of the retaliatory use of the Velocity Inducer. Neither driver could be compelled to slow down to allow the merger of the other, resulting in many more Thelma and Louise situations than Hollywood intended to inspire.

Politicians and social media have limited automakers’ ability to go on the record, and none of them have been brought before the many Senate hearings on the subject. They originally kept blathering about “turn signals” as related to the velocity inducer equipment. No self-respecting blog, TikTok, or podcast will speak to Honda’s PR team following that.

Ultimately, the United States Congress bilaterally decided last Thursday to pass sweeping regulation regarding the velocity inducer. The device was banned in every state. Texas rejected the law as unconstitutional shortly thereafter. We asked Governor Tim Tomlinson yesterday for a comment, and we are befuddled to announce that all he sent back was a tea-stained piece of paper with a bullet hole that read “Come and take it”.

A few years ago, I bought a used 1992 Prelude. It was old and had been worked on, but had all the right little stickers to keep me out of trouble on the road. It wasn’t smogged, but I felt confident to handle that (at the time). Foreshadowing foreshadowing foreshadowing…

I met the guy on a gorgeous summer evening in the back parking lot of my local Carl’s Junior, I assume everyone buys cars from their “uncles” at the Carl’s. My friend and I looked over the car, and nothing of importance could be found in that light which led me to believe $1500 was too much to pay for a running car.

I greased the guy’s palm and we drove it home to the place I rented on the edge of town and got to work.

We found many issues in the better lighting of my home garage. While frustrated, I still didn’t see anything that flew in the face of the $1500 price tag. The thing ran, but needed a radiator, leaked a bit of oil, and featured a suspension and ride that felt more like a carnival lawsuit than the car that revolutionized independent rear suspension.

I poured my heart and soul into that thing. I polished it and cleaned it. We replaced the suspension with a solid set of raceland coilovers. I replaced the stereo. We did it fairly economically, as the local Pick-N-Pull had a few skeletons we could pick through for parts to great avail.

I even got the air conditioner blowing cold again. Might have been one of the few Ludes in its condition with working AC in my area that wasn’t a garage-kept show car.

That’s where the real issues started to rear their heads, but I was too in love to see them as they were.

While I upgraded the headlights (a known issue with the car at the time of purchase), I struggled to get the newly wired lights to turn on. Further inspection showed frayed and broken wiring harnesses at the driver’s side front fender. I pulled out my shop manual and made up the wires according to the schematics. Lights turned on and the AC compressor worked!

The question never came to me: Why were the wires broken? Rats?

A collision?

Meh. I fixed it. No biggie.

Back to replacing crankcase seals, vc gaskets, and finalizing replacements of radiator thermostats. Couldn’t have been a collision.

Foreshadowing.

The smog check was all that remained in my quest to get this thing road legal. I learned a valuable lesson here. Cars made before 1995 (OBD1 standard) are significantly harder to smog in CA. Some guys can take hours to do it because the machines are not being made or serviced anymore, so they break and screw up all the time. This also means it is expensive. It cost me around $200 to convince this guy to even look at my car.

Finally, the machine was back together and ready to take to work. I started driving it a couple of days. I loved it. It was super low to the ground and ate corners like nothing I had ever driven. The stereo was loud and clear. The AC was cold. It was everything that I wanted it to be until I caught a rock under my bumper and lost a chunk of my radiator on the off-ramp.

I limped into work, shut the car off, and got it towed home that evening (ouch $$$).

I was beside myself; I must have missed something, anything. Couldn’t find any reason other than a streak of bad luck. I am not a mechanic, but I have access to people who know engines and subsystems like the backs of their hands. We came up with nothing and decided the time was right to sell it.

I put it back on the FB marketplace and started getting hits on it immediately, the most respectable of them asked me to see a CarFax.

The fricking CarFax. I didn’t even pull one the day I bought the thing. Figured I would cough up the $40 now and find out for myself before I sold someone something I regretted.

And boy did I regret it.

Multiple repairs, title issues, and even a shop reporting an odometer rollback. Who knows how many miles this thing had been driven? The damage I had detected from the frayed wiring and headlight issues could be easily traced to a front left collision in the maintenance record.

I couldn’t sell this thing in good faith in the condition it was. I sent the man the carfax and told him I would renegotiate on the new information we both now had, but the man smartly bowed out, and the car made its way to a junker for a measly $500.

For those keeping score at home, I went in at $1500, put over $600 of parts, labor, and towing into it, and walked away with $500, some potent lessons, and my tail between my legs. Those lessons cost me almost $2000 to learn and put me into an interesting situation with a car dealership to get my wife a car so I could have my Kia Soul back. Man did that hurt.

But you know what?

I’d do it again.

Last week, my wife and I both had a day from Hell. Neither of us felt like doing much of anything, #relatablecontent, and we decided to go out to dinner. What we found on our little jaunt surprised us both.

We decided to go to Chili’s and sit down. Having a different ambiance and someone bringing us food sounded better with our heads buzzing and spinning from the day’s happenings.

I was dead set on some soup and chicken, the weather seemed to demand it. Then I took a look at the back of the menu. I mentally turned down the volume of the sizzling fajitas walking by so I could read the menu better, and there staring me in the face was what I have come to recognize as the deal of the century; for only $10.99, I could have soup, an Arnold Palmer, a burger, and fries.

They don’t serve soup at Carl’s, but if they did, I could easily pay well over $20 for the same. Since when did the fast food joints get to charge more than a sit-down restaurant? Double?

Something had slipped by me over the first half of my life. A majority of Americans alongside myself had done something that sounded blatantly obvious… They demanded convenience so hard that sit-down restaurants took it in the shorts to win back business flying to drive-throughs for twice the money.

My mind wandered through the missed evidence I saw over the years. Amazon, Shein, Temu, etc all sauntered into my mental salon for a chat. I credited their success to us demanding more and more for the same money. Classic misattribution. I have begun to understand that the reason for the success seems to be an increase in social anxiety combined with the potent and heady musk of convenience. The 7-11-ization of things! I’ve been paying more for inferior doughnuts for years. Less for better coffee, notably, but more for most other things, even apples-to-apples.

How we buy things is more important nowadays than how much we buy, or even what we buy.

Shein and Temu were simple to suss out: we would easily tolerate crappier stuff if it was cheap and fast. My dear friend Mike would use a shopping app called Geek back in the early 10s to get his fix for cheap knick-knacks if he didn’t mind waiting exceptionally long. We sacrificed convenience back then for price and waited for our doodads. Since then, prices have fallen and they have seppuku-ed their dishonorably long wait times.

Amazon was harder, as it wasn’t cheaper, but it was faster and didn’t require us to wash our asses to buy cheese doodles. You also didn’t have to sacrifice quality to use them, either. Name brands sell there, and you can often find them for sale on Prime, guaranteeing that impulse buying wouldn’t delay that dopamine hit any longer than was necessary.

Years of price pressure have given way to cross-faded, naked 4 AM shop-a-paloozas fueled by strong desires to avoid people and weather and facilitated by the data gathered by that little black mirror we all have in our pockets. The elite would stow that mirror securely in a plastic clip or leather holster fastened to their belts, but that’s beyond the point.

The unbelievable power of global markets to give what is demanded has remained undeniable. The only holdout is what we are demanding. Much like rats in a study given the ability to electroshock themselves into little rat orgasms, we will hit that button until we die, damn the science.

So how does this tie into the world today? Lambasting globalism has been a hobby horse of many a politically minded individual over the past decade or so. With the recent shift in political power in the US, the mood of the top surrounding international free markets has suffered a vibe shift; They caught the car, so to speak.

Now what? As tariffs are mostly bargaining tools, we may not see massive change in products imported from our trading allies. Some others, namely China, haven’t been lucky enough to consider themselves that for a long time.

More than just tariffs can affect this. Recent US Customs policy changes have impacted Temu and Shein. They both relied on the small size of parcels and other loopholes to avoid customs inspections and fees. With that ending, some say to expect greater than 10% cost increases for the business vertical.

That is shared by all parts of the production chain, including the consumer.

The pricing pressures applied to these convenience-driven markets will prove exceptionally hard to mitigate, as they will also seriously impact the timeliness of deliveries in these channels.

This will not just impact companies based in China. It will affect anyone who imports things from there.

People tend to conclude without considering all options. This might drive someone to say “This will make income inequality worse” or “we will all be poor”, without considering human and systemic responses.

Recall the Peak Oil Theory, The Population Bomb, and the Y2K bug. We found solutions or discovered shortcomings with these theories as we went along. Y2K was abated by the hard work of software engineers and embedded IT professionals. Extraction and surveying technology changed all the metrics on Peak Oil. The population bomb was defused by agricultural advancements and the Green Revolution.

We didn’t predict these solutions, but dedication, hard work, and emergent order addressed them. It stands to reason that the same mechanics would apply here. Billions of humans will work hard to make their lives work in a less globalized world. That does mean some sacrifices, but in the words of Dr. Ian Malcom, PhD, “Life…uh…finds a way”.

Or was it “That’s a big pile of shit”.

Someone I deeply trust and respect once told me “Ska is the music that plays in the mind of a 13-year-old at the skate park who got an extra mozzarella stick with his order".

He’s right, and I desperately wish I was that kid.

I’ll take sick tre flips and skinned knees over mortgages and timesheets any day. Sadly, we don’t always get to make awesome choices like this, and the world drives us to grow and change in ways we don’t always wish we had to.

That’s what makes 3rd wave ska so great for folks of a certain age (here’s looking at you, millennials). The sometimes irreverent, always party vibe that oozes from the cracked plastic CD case your friend loaned you always takes you back.

Goldfinger, Reel Big Fish, Streetlight Manifesto, The Aquabats, Less Than Jake, and many more helped drive the scene out of its pop-punk and sun-soaked origins and into the near mainstream. They are all very fun to listen to. Some of them might stick with you.

Riding The Waves

Ska is much older than that, though. This moment in time might only reflect its highest popularity. Originating in Caribbean indigenous and cultural music and its mix with popular music of the 50’s and 60’s, ska found its first wave. This is the most niche, with the least players still around. I saw Hepcat (what I consider a sort of first-wave-styled group) on the beach in Huntington back in 2017 and I was thoroughly surprised to see them all still grooving. It was wonderful, though a bit jarring, hearing them between Less Than Jake and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones that day.

You might think of 1st-wave as a double-time reggae with horns. That runs the risk of offending super-fans, but its helpful in understanding the vibe. For further listening, check out the Skatelites, Prince Buster, Toots and the Maytals, and many more.

This, combined with the economic and social movements of the 80s in the UK brought the tides back in for the second wave, or as some call it, the Two-Tone scene. This was popularized by bands like The (English) Beat. Many, however, would attribute the sound of this movement to one band very heavily.

Yep. Madness.

The Heavy Heavy Monster Sound.

Songs like One Step Beyond, Our House, and Night Boat to Cairo brought 1st wave sentimentalities forward with the modern instrumentation and styling of the music popular at the time.

It is interesting to note that Madness got its name from a Prince Buster (1st wave) song of the same name, and One Step Beyond (one of their biggest hits) is also a cover of his work.

A strong socio-political message was present in much of the scene; Massive socio-economic and race-related upheavals rocked the populace at the time, and musicians and fans alike found solidarity and unity in the Two-Tone movement. Not all the music produced carried the signal, but you couldn’t stop it.

This movement was fairly short-lived, and the early 80s saw a changing landscape as the music and rhythms moved across the Atlantic to the US. Bands like the Toasters were frequently seen as the key transitional outfit, updating the sound and keeping the scene dancing. They haven’t yet stopped, booking dates up and down the Atlantic US and coastal Europe. Honestly, their summer is BUSY. They are running a set almost every single day in May. Most 3rd-wave bands never toured as much as The Toasters are right now. This must be a testament to the meaning and quality of their work over 43 years later.

All of the music and the movements discussed before this came together to create the sound popularized in the 90s and pioneered by bands like the Uptones, The Toasters, and Operation Ivy. Like the 2nd wave before it, the rhythm came from before and the music followed the flow of the times. Punk, emo, and the like fell into the mainstream, and the upbeats found their way back into the mix.

Some criticize the 3rd wave and its suburban shine as having lost the plot of two-tone movement. Songs like the Aquabats’ Pizza Day and Reel Big Fish’s Beer didn’t carry the monochrome and sanguine-tinged cynicism of the Toasters or the deep cultural roots of Toots and the Maytals.

I am slipping into opinion, but I would posit that music is a representation of culture, and culture shifts with the times. Ideas can come and go. Movements wax and wane. The way that we communicate ideas can last forever. Heavy concepts and music with a message were present in the 3rd wave but rarely won awards or massive record deals. Less Than Jake very often writes about cultural hang-ups, mental health, and understanding each other as more than “drunken glue-sniffers”.

But is it Dead?

Times change. When the scene changes, or maybe what sells changes, so too does the music. That doesn’t mean that the scene is dead. Many local and national touring bands are still chopping it up and letting their two-tone Bruges scuff dancehalls worldwide. 3rd wave giants still tour, and pioneers of the future scene are writing and playing even now.

We are a long way from Warped Tour, though that is supposedly coming back to ensure all the people under 55 with back pain gather in one place.

I have recently joined one of these bands, playing sax. It is a meaningful experience, and I want to believe that I contribute to the enjoyment and meaning that others may find in their lives.

No. Ska is not dead, otherwise, I’d have nowhere to play but my office and I don’t think my neighbors could handle any more than they already have.

So for the love of all good things, see a ska show today. Your local HOA might just thank you.

The Exhausted Middle popped smoke 6 months ago, the Nonplussed Nougaty Center dipped last quarter, and now the Interested Internals are getting BTFO’ed. Just about everyone watching the crappiest election ever has dropped their little pink ballot into a dumpster fire by now. The ones with the most remote hope for change, improvement, or even acknowledgment of their socio-political issues face fatigue previously reserved for special forces or ethical Boeing repair technicians.

The culmination of the affair for many will, unfortunately, be Thanksgiving, where nuanced conversations about complex issues will render you more cooked than the damned bird. Those lucky enough to put this to bed by election day will likely see the climax of their frustration staring at a thick paper ballot over the dashboard in the car on the way to the local makeshift inciner… I mean ballot drop box.

I waited until almost the 11th hour to cast my ballot, and I understood why I delayed the second I started reading…

Nobody knows who these people even are…

President? Of course.

Senators, representatives? Less so, but research is easy.

Local officers? GTFOH, homeboy.

What information is readily available from my locality leaves much to be desired. I can see their financial documentation, who has financially supported their campaigns, but out here, it’s all homebuilders or independent doctors, lawyers, and family friends. Their campaigns cost little more than a new RAV4 each, and the donors are so similar, that it is almost irrelevant. Effectively it could be something as simple as the number of signs you see, or whether you saw them in person once.

Then you see all the signs everywhere saying Grumblestump for Parks and Rec, but the job they want goes in one ear and out the other. The name sticks, and when you see it in some odd place on the ballot, you bubble it in, because at least you think you might remember their policies.

I think that if I ever ran, I’d just put up more signs than everyone else and those signs would say my last name and nothing else. For the reasons above, I think name rec alone might be the largest driver of success. Here’s to you, Grumblestump…

Then we get to the most frustrating issue of all:

Manufactured Consent, Intentional Confusion, and Deceptive Propositions

When I started reading the propositions, a couple were different, but most were bond measures.

Some bond measures required a bare majority (51%) and others required 55% to pass.

Those aren’t big deals per se, but the devil is oft in the details.

Someone somewhere wrote these things and laughed as if they intentionally did Satan’s work in crafting these propositions. They are complicated to understand, unclear in their scope, and most importantly, a yes vote for the measure does not necessarily mean affirming the sale of the bonds.

That means some folks out there unintentionally voted against their interests.

I’m not sure why plain English written for the average American is unacceptable for ballot measures, but it seems that they do it just in case we start thinking they get paid too much for spewing feces over the electorate.

According to the Literacy Project, the average American reads at an 8th-grade level and 54% of Americans read at a 4th-grade level.

and 12% of American adults ARE EFFECTIVELY ILLITERATE.

And they are voters.

Look at this: Do you think an 8th grader can read this well enough to responsibly decide what they are voting on?

This seemed much easier for me to read, and I felt much more informed. As an important note, however, the original AI rewrite stated $3.40 per $100, not the actual $0.034 per $100. I edited that. Human in the loop and all that jive.

Policy writers are amongst the literacy elite, and their editors/approval chains/writing standards don’t allow them to be understood by anyone who doesn’t read at that level. These aren’t written for the voters to understand… so who are they written for?

The premise that bonds must be sold to cover the cost of a program is a little dubious as well, as I would imagine important things like this could bear redirection of funds from less successful or overfunded programs, but that isn’t even being considered as my state just lost billions they couldn’t account for to handle homelessness this year alone.

Then the policies themselves bury a poison pill underneath something I would typically support, leaving me feeling gross regardless of my decision for, against, or to leave it blank, as I am wont to do when I am not dead sure on a position. Burying changing possession of drugs to a felony under a blanket of cracking down on theft was one such instance this go around. There was no winning.

I think Americans need a win sometime very soon due to the rising tension not mentioned in this article and the ballot bullshit presently discussed. Like 747 quality control, just sign and look away, friends. Sign and look away.

Election day is less than two weeks away and many people have already voted early, mailed in, or decided to stay home and vote over the internet on r/pol. Unless you live in one of these states, the process might seem less valuable than a fake Rolex at a Convention for the Blind.

My home state, California, is gonna be more locked up than a Puffy Party Freak-Off Platinum Sponsor (and probably was one). The whole situation seems pretty bleak to me. As a third-party voter, I went through the motions and elected to waste my vote the best way I knew how; I voted affirmatively of my beliefs and abandoned any desire to vote defensively, mostly because I couldn’t stomach it. I fully endorse Chase Oliver of the Libertarian Party for the reasons so eloquently established by the Editor-At-Large of Reason Magazine, , but that is not the direct point of the article.

The Immodest Proposal I plead you consider today is not just to vote affirmatively, but even more heinously, to consider voting for Chase Oliver in your state if it is not one of the above swing states, and even if you hate him.

The point is to play the system for all it is worth, abandoning the concept of Votes-As-Endorsement, and to use your collective voting power to enact some good old smoky backroom election and party reform from the inside out, without party, congressional, or even local government approval. A true renegade scheme, like pissing at the urinal with your pants around your ankles. Feels good, man.

Ok, so you’re gonna bite huh? Now that you’re prepared for the most deranged political hot take of the 2024 election cycle, here’s why I think Californians and Texans should drop Trump and Kamala and vote for Chase Oliver, even if you hate him.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

My reasons are threefold:

Your vote will not affect the outcome of the state electoral college.

Votes have most often been won through fear. Many of those reading most surely thought “If I do what the crazy internet newsletter idiot says, the bad guy will win”. I urge those of you who felt that to reconsider. Earlier I referenced these states as the well-understood swing states in this election. Those are:

• Arizona

• Georgia

• Michigan

• North Carolina

• Pennsylvania

• Wisconsin

• Nevada

I understand the feelings you may have about this admittedly glowing red-hot take, but the campaigns of these candidates care less than an RN on FMLA if you don’t live in one of these seven states. California and Texas are in the can, rendering your political endorsement of either of the two major parties irrelevant. That alone would be enough to make serious change happen if only we were bold enough to bubble one in for the little guy.

Your vote can help grant more voices access to debate stages, campaign funding, and other resources.

Congratulations on getting this far. The hard part is mostly over.

Even securing a very small portion of the popular vote would drive more attention, funding, and election access to voices that will sharpen up the conversation.

Remember this debate? What do you remember feeling after watching it? Was it a sort of relief? Was it refreshing to see two candidates go to war over issues and policy rather than debasement and debauchery? A third person on stage might get run over by two bullies at each other’s throats the whole time, but they will move the needle toward things that more Americans care about in the same breath, which brings me to my third point:

More candidates at debates with appropriate funding force the Republicans and Democrats to field better candidates.

Campaigns love data, and that data helps drive parties to field candidates that can win. In the end, parties don’t seek to meet the needs of the electorate directly. They seek to win the election. By proxy, they are forced to see to our needs somewhat, but never seemingly enough to matter to us, leaving us with a bitter “promises abandoned” taste in our mouths after pulling the lever for the guy or gal that promises us they will free us from the potential of being destroyed by The Other Guy(TM).

A multi-front war forces the Republicans and Democrats not just to beat The Other Guy(TM), but both of them! The major parties will immediately and irrevocably be required to develop platforms, candidates, and policies that are stronger to have the same chance at “winning” the game that they have now, giving a definite advantage to neither of the parties, but a clear edge to YOU.

It also immediately split the room three ways, almost demanding the implementation of Ranked Choice Voting, as no candidate is anywhere near as likely to get the 270 electoral votes required to win outright. Either a runoff or RCV would be needed to establish the quorum.

Constitutional and honest election reform has the potential to be a purifying fire ripping through the diseased and overgrown forest of our electorate, sowing fertile ground for the next iteration. This leaves the strongest trees with the most fertile ground to feed ideas as they take root. My Immodest Proposal is the lightning strike (or hobo-sparked trash can) that can begin the process. Other meaningful election reforms (like RCV as mentioned earlier) will play an important role here, but they require approvals, votes by elected representatives, and other unreliable/unattainable input to achieve. This Proposal starts and ends with you.

In short, dear reader:

• If you aren’t in a swing state, vote for the libertarian candidate, Chase Oliver.

  • Even if you don’t like him, do it. It won’t change the outcome of the election.

  • If you do like him, please consider voting for him even if you do live in one of these all-powerful swing states.

• It will not affect the outcome of this election (and it isn’t intended to).

• I understand how this will infuriate some, and I apologize for the adamancy; I urge you to consider the implications below and do it anyway.

In return, we could gain:

• Better ideas and debates

• Better funding for additional voices

• Apply pressure on the major parties to field better candidates

• And the outcome of the election won’t change. You don’t have to eat 4 years of The Other Guy(TM) to give my Proposal a try.
